Luxe Pack New York celebrated the winners of its Luxe Pack in Green Awards on May 8th—congratulations to the winners!

The winners are:

  • Arcade’s 80% Paper Packette is the Best Sustainable Packaging Innovation
  • Groupe Pochet’s Life-Cycle Assessment is the Best Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative

The Luxe Pack in Green Awards awards presentation took place on the second day of Luxe Pack New York, at the Javits Center. Randy Gomez, Director of Partnerships for Berkeley College and Founder and CEO of Sparx Labs, hosted the awards presentation.

Read on for more about these two winners, which represent innovations in sustainability.

Arcade Beauty Wins Best Sustainable Packaging Innovation

Luxe Pack New York announced Arcade Beauty as the first winner of its Luxe Pack in Green Award. The 80% Paper Packette won the Best Sustainable Packaging Innovation Award.

The supplier’s sampling solution is the first considered “recycle-ready.” Designed with sustainability in mind, this solution can replace traditional plastic foil packettes. It is ideal for color cosmetics, skincare, and haircare products.

Making it easy for consumers to recycle is key for any material to truly be “recyclable,” and this is where this design excels. Arcade’s 80% Paper Packette is made from 80% FSC-certified paper. It meets repulpability standards, so it can be recycled through the paper stream.

The 80% Paper Packette’s innovative design reduces plastic by 76%, when compared to a traditional foil structure, according to Arcade. “The new 80% paper structure optimizes the critical barrier and sealant layers, and replaces the remaining layers with paper,” the company explains. It’s a step closer to a mono-material design.

Beauty brands are striving to minimize waste, and traditional plastic-based samplers don’t have an eco-friendly reputation among consumers. “This high-paper-content packette provides an eco-friendly alternative without sacrificing effectiveness,” Arcade stated.

Groupe Pochet Wins Best Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative

Next up, Luxe Pack New York celebrated the second winner of its Luxe Pack in Green Awards, Groupe Pochet. Groupe Pochet’s Life-Cycle Assessment won the Best Corporate Social Responsibility Initiative.

The supplier’s new Life-Cycle Assessment is among the first to measure the impact of the beauty packaging manufacturing process. It considers the specific requirements and constraints of fragrance, skincare, and makeup packaging, which is unique for a Life-Cycle Assessment.

“A perfume bottle or a makeup case is not manufactured using the same furnaces or presses as a food jar or a water bottle cap,” Pochet stated. This makes existing environmental impact databases less effective to assess beauty packaging.

The Life-Cycle Assessment tool follows the PEF (Product Environmental Footprint) methodology. The PEF analyzes 16 environmental impact indicators, including carbon footprint, water consumption, acidification, ecotoxicity, and more. “These indicators are weighted using defined methodologies to achieve a comprehensive and balanced global assessment,” Pochet stated.

“The goal is to help in the decision-making process—to eco-design multi-material packaging,” Pochet explained. The supplier says its goal is to reduce the environmental impact of all of the packaging it designs and produces, by 2030.
